Disabled learners achieve 90% pass rate

A Services Seta learnership programme to assist learners with disabilities has been a great success with more than 90% of the learners graduating. More than four million tested for HIV
Addressing hundreds of Driefontein residents during World Aids Day, Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe announced that since the launch of the HIV Counselling and Testing Campaign (HCT) in April this year: 4.6 million people have been tested, 5.5 million have received counselling, and approximately 2.5 million people were screened for TB.

Addressing a breakfast meeting of government and business leaders, Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe called on corporate SA to work together with government investing in education upliftment programmes. Motlanthe urged the leaders to consider social partnerships to meet the infrastructure and facilities needs - classrooms, libraries, laboratories and sporting facilities - all are needed to effectively prepare learners for the world of work.

The Equal Education campaign opened their third school library at the Masiyile High School in Khayelitsha. Only 8% of SA schools have libraries and the lack of library facilities has been shown to hamper learner performance at school.

All of the delegates who started the 4-month-long course completed it and nearly achieved the certificate with distinction.
