Drastic changes to Seta operations

Higher Education and Training Minister has introduced “drastic changes” to the way that Setas operate. Blade Nzimande slammed some Setas for taking the government to court and insisted that the Setas will become partners of his department in implementing the will of government.

World Health Organisation approves new rapid TB test

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has endorsed use of a new rapid diagnosis for tuberculosis (TB). This move will increase access to rapid treatment especially for those who are at risk of drug resistant TB, and those with HIV co-infection. The rapid test has been welcomed by the South African Medical Research Council. Despite improvements in care and control, about 1.7 million people were killed by TB in 2009.

Addressing a breakfast meeting of government and business leaders, Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe called on corporate SA to work together with government investing in education upliftment programmes. Motlanthe urged the leaders to consider social partnerships to meet the infrastructure and facilities needs - classrooms, libraries, laboratories and sporting facilities - all are needed to effectively prepare learners for the world of work.

Public invited to comment on pension fund regulations

The National Treasury has released an updated draft of regulations of the Pension Fund Act. The latest draft takes account of comments and submissions of the public since the previous February draft and is intended to remedy the shortcomings of the existing Regulation 28. As extensive consultation has already taken place, the public are asked to make technical submissions, although contributions on broader principles will also be accepted.

Media reports suggesting that the matric results will be adjusted are damaging and mischievous. Speaking for the education department, Granville Whittle said that Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga has no intention of adjusting the 2010 matric results and they will be a true reflection of learners’ achievement.
