    DST and Microsoft partner to fast-track development

    The Department of Science and Technology and Microsoft South Africa have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to fast-track high-performance computing, human capital and enterprise development. The memorandum is expected to bring foreign direct investment in research and development, and to harness existing Information and Communication Technology (ICT) skills programmes to support knowledge-generating capacity.

    SA to host 62nd Astronautical Congress

    Africa will be hosting the 62nd International Astronautical Congress (IAC 2011) in Cape Town. The congress, which will run concurrently with a large exhibition, is expected to draw over 3500 conference participants and exhibitors.

    Countries commit to raising funds to build Square Kilometre Array

    Eight countries have joined forces with South Africa by signing a letter of intent to see the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) built. Science and Technology Minister Naledi Pandor welcomed the agreement, which committed the countries to securing funding for the next phase of the project - at about R14.4 million Rand - which could start as early as 2016. The design, construction and operation of the telescope has the potential to impact on skills development in science, engineering and in associated industries, not only in the host countries but in all project partner countries.

    Sumbandila Satellite commemorative stamps now available

    Commemorative stamps recognising South Africa's Sumbandila Satellite, launched in Russia in 2009 are now available. The satellite carries a high-resolution camera that produces images for use in monitoring agriculture, mapping infrastructure and land use, tracking population movement, and measuring the water levels of dams.

    Pandor: South Africa well on track in Square Kilometer Array bid

    Addressing the National Press Club in Pretoria, Science and Technology Minister Naledi Pandor has confirmed that South Africa is well on track to hosting the world’s largest telescope - the Square Kilometer Array (SKA). Winning the bid would not only benefit South Africa economically, but would enable South Africa to attract the world’s best scientists.


    SA must strengthen green technology transfer

    South Africa must get better at acquiring green knowledge and technology transfer — or be left out of global markets, says Radhika Perrot. Technology transfer has a fair mention in the Kyoto Protocol, with the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) the main market instrument designed to transfer technology from Northern to Southern countries.

    DC Machine Operation, Maintenance & Inspection
