    Zuma introduces free year at university

    President Zuma announced a step towards free university education in his annual ANC January statement in Polokwane. From this year students who qualify for funding from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme and are in their final year at a public university will receive a loan equivalent to the full cost of study - which will not have to be paid back if the student graduates.

    Home schooling gets 94% pass rate

    Among home learners who received at least two years of home education, the 2010 matric pass rate was 94%, with 65% receiving university exemption. This tendency confirms extensive research in other countries that found that children perform better the longer they are homeschooled, says Bouwe van der Eems, a trustee of the Pestalozzi Trust. The Pestalozzi Trust has been providing legal protection for thousands of homeschooling families for over twelve years.

    National business and management training company Business Development Unit, formerly known as Business Studies Unit (BSU), has announced a new partnership with PE-based Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University Business School. Through the new deal the NMMU Business School will be epanding to KZN through a certification and accreditation agreement with Business Development Unit.

    Labour law reforms introduced

    The Labour Minister has announced that major reforms to the country's labour laws will be published in draft form on Friday 17th December. The Minister characterised the changes to the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, Labour Relations Act, and other labour laws as 'far reaching'. Tha national government has been attempting to clamp down on labour brokers and other atypical employment practices.
