Mine Health & Safety Law
New health and safety publication hits shelves
Wed, 18 Jan 2012 16:27

Willem Le Roux
LexisNexis South Africa , a leading provider of content and technology solutions, announced the launch of the new Mine Health & Safety Law publication, which is aimed at mine health and safety law practitioners, legal advisers, mining inspectors, and managerial and senior supervisory personnel at mines.
The purpose of this handbook is to provide mining industry professionals with an easily accessible version of the Mine Health and Safety Act 29 of 1996 (MHSA) and the regulations which are binding there under, said attorney and author of the publication, Willem le Roux. As far as possible, comments have been inserted immediately below provisions of the Act to explain a particular aspect thereof. Because not all professionals have had legal training, this handbook attempts to explain certain legal concepts in an uncomplicated manner.
In part two of the publication, certain concepts, legal principles and provisions are explained to facilitate a better understanding of certain provisions of the MHSA. These matters include the following: the relevant sources and branches of law; criminal liability of a corporate body; the statutory health and safety criteria; the person who is ultimately responsible for health and safety; the meaning of the concept mine; the scope of application of the MHSA and the reporting of accidents and dangerous occurrences, to name a few.
In South Africa, the mining industry has been associated with a lot of controversy, and it is therefore important that all professionals involved in the industry familiarise themselves with the necessary legislation and come to grips with the important health and safety measures of the mining industry, added le Roux.
By partnering with the most knowledgeable experts in the industry, such as le Roux, LexisNexis aims to provide legal and business professionals with materials that are highly regarded as sources of accurate, current and reliable information, said Nick Bent, executive manager of New Business Development at LexisNexis. At LexisNexis, we strive to deliver efficient knowledge-driven solutions to our customers. With the unique combination of authoritative content, relationships with experts in various industries and powerful research and advanced productivity tools, we assist organisations and professionals in achieving better outcomes for their businesses.
