    Labour broker research challenges misperceptions

    Labour Dept releases new UIF income threshold

    The Department of Labour has announced a new maximum income threshold of for contributions towards the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) for 2007, with immediate effect. According to the department, this is in line with last month’s announcement by Minister of Labour, Membathisi Mdladlana of a 7 percent increase in the maximum earning level of contributions.

    ILO adopts standards for fisheries sector

    The just ended 96th session of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) has adopted new standards designed to improve the conditions of over 30 million people working in the fisheries sector worldwide.     Taxi operators advised to make UIF contributions

    Manganese poisoning inquiry set to take off

    A formal enquiry into the exposure of workers to poisonous fumes at the Assmang plant in Cato Ridge, Durban is set to start on the 12 April. The enquiry forms part of the Department of Labour's investigation which started in November 2006, when six workers were reported to be suffering from poisoning. Manganese fumes or dust that is inhaled primarily affects the central nervous system.
