    Minister Blade Nzimande told Services Seta stakeholders that his department had learnt a number of lessons in the course of resolving the three-month dispute over changes to the way Setas are to be run. "Courts must never be the solution for skills development," he said, promising better communication in the future.

    Services Seta battle ends with a truce

    The tit-for-tat legal battle between the Services Seta and Minister Blade Nzimande has come to an end. Both parties have agreed to a dissolve the current council and put in place a new governing body, headed by Minister Nzimande's appointee, Dr Sihle Moon. Nzimande has agreed to withdraw the appeals against two court decisions that found he had acted unlawfully in making changes to the Seta management.

    Unions want Ivor Blumenthal dismissed

    Trade union Nehawu has come out against embattled Services Seta CEO Ivor Blumenthal, calling for his immediate dismissal. At a Services Seta press conference Blumenthal announced that the organisation was considering legal action against the Higher Education and Training Minister over changes to Seta governance. Since then there has been little public support for Blumenthal, with Cosatu, Nehawu and the SACP publicly criticising his actions. Business grouping Busa has also been unsupportive, publicly announcing that they did not support the Services Seta's plans for legal action.

    Communist party not after Seta funds

    The SA Communist Party has denied claims that Blade Nzimande is trying to get access to Seta funds so that he can syphen them off to the SACP. Setas report to Nzimande's Department of Higher Education and Training and he also serves as Secretary General of the SACP. Services Seta boss Ivor Blumenthal has alleged that he has been approached twice to fund the SACP. A claim the communist party reject.

In a major shake-up of Seta governance the Minister of Higher Education and Training has announced the names of the independent chairpersons of the Seta boards. Other changes promised by the Minister include the involvement of his office, and the national Cabinet, in the appointment of Seta CEOs.

    At least 28 000 tourism industry employees are to benefit from a new tourism Seta Abet programme, which is part of plans to boost the country's skills base particularly among the black youth and women.     Eskom to open their own University

    State electricity utility Eskom will spend R800 million per year running its own tertiary institution to train its staff in the hope of reducing its skills shortage. Lack of skills at the utility has been partly blamed for the country's electricity crisis.     A recent Foodbev Seta roadshow informed delegates that within their sector equivalent of 0.54% of payroll was spent on training and development in 2003. This rose in 2007 to 0.92%. I wrote the initial recruitment Unit Standards and was contracted within the pilot program to do the actual recruitment training. The objective of the program was to train 100 previously disadvantaged learners.

    The Printing Industries Federation of South Africa (Pifsa) has issued a statement defending itself against allegations of financial irregularities made by other stakeholders in the Mappp Seta.
