The new CSG Top-up will see caregivers receive the current value of the grant R480, plus an additional R240 (50% of the basic CSG) bringing the total amount received to R720.
It is expected that this new initiative will benefit 191 200 beneficiaries in the 2022/23 financial year. This number of beneficiaries is expected to rise to 238 500 in 2023/24 and 287 400 in the 2024/25 financial year. The projected expenditure for CSG top-up for the 2022/23 financial year is R550.66million, however, will be lower due to delayed implementation.
The DSD said there were delays in the translation of the regulations and it is expected that the regulations will be published in June 2022. Potential beneficiaries will need to apply for the grant and will be paid their top-up (R240) together with their CSG as one payment.
Applications will need to be made at the Sassa offices. It is expected that an online application platform will be made available during the year.
Once the CSG top-up grant is legislated, it will become a permanent support measure. This is provided that beneficiaries meet the qualifying criteria for the grant.
