Social grants play a crucial role in the livelihoods of South Africans who have no alternative means of making an income. These grants are administered by the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) and include the following:
- The Old Persons Grant,
- Disability Grant,
- Care Dependency Grant,
- Social Relief of Distress Grant,
- War Veterans Grant,
- Foster Child Grant,
- Child Support Grant
- A Grant-in-aid.
It is crucial that you meet the eligibility requirements of your preferred social grant before submitting your application. This is primarily because these grants are specifically intended for people with no income. Sassa will subject you to a means test to ensure that this is true.
The agency will also require that you provide supporting documents to accompany your application depending on the grant your are applying for. This is with the exception of the Foster Child Grant, as it is paid out on the date of a court order.
How To Track Your Sassa Status
Provided that you qualify and have submitted your application, or in the case of an initial rejection, an application appeal, You will have to constantly keep track of your feedback from Sassa using the steps outlined below:
- Visit the SASSA website.
- Enter your ID number.
- Enter your cell phone number that you used to apply for.
- Track your grant appeal or overall status.
As mentioned above, the Social Relief of Distress grant is also provided by Sassa to qualifying individuals. The difference is that it was not implemented on a permanent basis. This grant is slated to end on 31 March 2024. So if you are one of its applicants this is how you can keep track of your application feedback.

What To Do If Your Sassa Grant Application Is Denied

When this happens Sassa grants you the chance to lodge an appeal, but this has to be done within 90 days of receiving feedback from Sassa.
