Minister Angie Motshekga has announced that grade 12 learners will not be writing mid-year exams this year. The Minister’s announcement has not been without criticism.

The Western Cape Department of Education has decided to extend applications for the 2022 school year. 


Learners can now register to write the May/June Senior Certificate (SC) and National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations.

With the new year now in progress, the Department of Basic Education has released the official school calendar for 2021. 


Basic Education Director-General, Mathanzima Mweli held a media briefing today to discuss the progress that the department has been making with the marking of exams. Marking is taking place at 177 exam centres across the country, with all marking centres chasing the deadline of 22 January 2021. 


Pit latrines and classroom shortages have been the reality of many schools in South Africa. The Department of Basic Education has failed to meet yet another deadline to improve schools and this has upset Equal Education. 


Government has released a proposed calendar for 2022. The 2020 school year has been a tough year for many schools and plans are now in motion to get back lost teaching time in the next 3 years.
