More than 42% of South African households are supported by women, according to research company Statista. This percentage grows in provinces with large rural areas, such as the Eastern Cape, where it sits at over 50%. Despite this, women still earn up to 35% less than men in certain jobs.

Early childhood education is considered the foundation for cognitive development in young children. The recent shift of the Early Childhood Development (ECD) function to the education department was done in the hopes of strengthening the sector.

As of April, the Early Childhood Development (ECD) sector no longer fell under the Department of Social Development and is now under the control of the Education Department.

After years of preparation, Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga will officially receive the Early Childhood Development (ECD) function from the Department of Social Development (DSD).

The Department of Basic Education and the Department of Social Development told the Joint Portfolio Committee of both departments that the shift function of Early Childhood Development (ECD) will be implemented on 1 April 2022. This follows the announcement made by the president Cyril Ramaphosa in the 2019 State Of the Nation Address that the function would migrate from the Department of Social Development to its Education counterpart.
