To expand the teacher population in the country, the Department of Basic Education started offering the Funza Lushaka Bursary Scheme. 2024 applications for the Funza Lushaka bursary will soon be closed.

With the first month of the year nearing its end, there isn’t much time for you to spare if you intend to become a beneficiary of the Funza Lushaka Bursary. Here are a few pointers on how you can apply.
 


The Funza Lushaka bursary is geared towards those wanting to study teaching at a public university in South Africa. If you want to study teaching, here is when applications will close. 


The number of students that are part of the Funza Lushaka Bursary Scheme have managed to find placement in schools, although the target was not met and is lower than last year. 


The number of teachers in South Africa is declining and the situation could worsen over the next five years. This research suggests that almost half of the country's teacher population will retire by the end of 2030.

 


The Funza Lushaka Bursary will allow for applications to be submitted later this month, on 17 October, 2022. But when does the application period close? 


Teaching is a noble profession as you actively took the decision to dedicate your life to shaping the future generation. In South Africa, the first step in this journey is to study teaching at university which could be fully funded through the Funza Lushaka bursary scheme.


Around 280 000 young people have been assisting with school operations around the country as part of the Basic Education Employment Initiative (BEEI). The education department are now encouraging interested participants to take the next step and apply for other opportunities.
