With the 2023 school year set to begin in one week, learners in one province are yet to know which school they will be attending. The Department responsible for placing these learners says capacity at schools remains a key challenge.

 


The majority of admission applications received from parents have been finalised by the Gauteng Department of Education.  However thousands of learners are yet to find out which school they will be attending in 2023.

 


Parents who did not submit school placement applications in Gauteng will soon be provided with an opportunity to do so. However, the schools that they can apply to for their children will be limited due to the availability of space.

 


Several improvements were made to the online admission system used by the Gauteng education department to speed up the placement of learners at schools. Despite these improvements, more than 30,000 learners do not know what school they will be attending in 2023.

 


The process of placing learners in Grade 1 and Grade 8 at Gauteng schools takes months to complete. The education department says the next step in the placement process requires the active participation of parents and guardians.

 


While the deadline to submit Gauteng Online Admissions passed a few weeks ago, an important deadline will expire on Tuesday 30 August 2022. These deadlines are important to ensure learners are placed in their preferred schools.

 


The closing of the Gauteng Online Admission System means that parents can no longer apply for school placement. However, this is just the beginning of the school placement process and a lot of work still needs to be done before learners are placed in schools in the province.
