Stakeholders in the higher education sector have welcomed Minister Nzimande's decision to dissolve the NSFAS board and place the scheme under administration. Several challenges have led the minister to make this decision. 


Approximately two million applications for bursaries and loans were submitted to NSFAS in 2024. Individuals are allowed to submit an appeal to NSFAS if their bursary application was rejected. 


The minister of higher education is calling on NSFAS to finalise  payments from 2023. This as concerns have been raised about these unpaid funds could prevent students from registering in 2024. 


More than one million students are currently being funded by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS). However, the sustainability of the scheme has been questioned with alternatives being presented by several stakeholders.
