A police service plays a critical role in ensuring the safety of individuals. However, experts believe that the strict requirements to join the South African police force could be detrimental to the country. 


A recent mass shooting in Soweto resulted in 15 people losing their lives. The extremely violent nature of the murders has brought the spotlight onto the South African Police Service (Saps) and their capacity to deal with crime in the country.

 


A police clearance certificate is a prerequisite for employment in many occupations. Despite the introduction of the new Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS), the South African Police Service (SAPS) has a backlog of over 85 000 clearance certificates.

 


The South African Police Service (SAPS) is on a recruitment drive that could bolster its ranks with at least 12 000 new policemen and policewomen by the end of 2023. 


After two years of not taking place the South African Police Service (SAPS) have announced the resumption of their police training programme.
