The Department of Basic Education participated in the Presidential Youth Employment Initiative which has provided jobs to more than 270 000 unemployed individuals. However, are participants banned from studying?

With youth unemployment at worryingly high levels in South Africa, many citizens have voiced their unhappiness around the criteria of the next phase of the Education Department's teacher assistant initiative, as well as its implementation. 

Almost two in every three youth in South Africa are unemployed as the unemployment rate in the category stands at a staggering 65.5%. 

As youth unemployment continues to soar in South Africa, several employment initiatives were introduced by the government to remedy the issue.

The employment spectrum changed dramatically overnight and thus we learned to become adaptable and flexible. Having a degree is not enough anymore. Earlier this year, the Department of Basic Education (DBE) announced they  received more than 6 million applications for the Teaching assistant and general school assistant posts. Only around 278 000 positions were available. 

Every year hundreds of thousands of students apply to universities in the hope of getting accepted in order to further their studies.

 After completing school, many students would like to further their education. This in the hope of gaining skills that would make them employable in the South African job market.
