The 2023 school year is set to begin in the next two weeks at schools around South Africa. However, some provincial education departments are still working to find space for learners who have not yet been placed at a school.

 


Schools in South Africa must conduct background checks on teachers and other staff before they can work at a school. Recently there has been an uptick in teachers failing to declare criminal convictions.

 


South Africa's Special Investigating Unit (SIU) found that government education employees and healthcare workers were the most frequent defrauders of the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF).


The South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) has accused the Nothern Cape education department of not paying substitute and temporary teachers as well as screening staff. SADTU says that they have not been paid for the past two to three months.


The University of Cape Town (UCT) has announced the launch of a new online high school. This new online high school will be the first of its kind in Africa.
