Certificate in Financial Markets

Introduction
The Certificate in Financial Markets is aimed at persons with a keen interest in financial markets, but who have little or no experience. Upon completion of the Certificate the student will be able to qualify as a Registered Person, in accordance with the requirements of the South African Institute of Financial Markets (SAIFM).
Duration
The certificate is a one year programme running from February until the end of November. Lectures will be presented after hours (once per week) as per the timetable. The course consists of a total of 21 contact sessions of 3 hours each.
Course Content
The certificate course will cover seven modules. See below for more information on the objectives of each module.
Certification
Successful candidates will obtain a Certificate from the University of Johannesburg at the end of the year.
Evaluation
One test per module will be written according to the set timetable.
Admission requirements
Applicants will need to be in possession of a Matric Certificate in order to gain entrance into the course. Applicants will be subjected to a selection process.
Fees
- The fees for 2010 will be approximately R11 000¹ per year (including module material) half of which is payable at registration.
Modules
Regulation of Financial Markets
This module will introduce the student to the philosophy and objectives of the South African Financial Markets regulatory system. The course will also address the impact of regulations on various aspects of the financial markets.
Introduction to Financial Markets
The objectives of this module are to introduce the student to the financial markets in South Africa and internationally and to prepare the student for the South African Institute of Financial Market’s Introduction to Financial Markets examination.
The Equity Market
The objectives of this module are to introduce the student to the vocabulary and mechanics of the equity market in South Africa and internationally, and to prepare the student for the South African Institute of Financial Market’s equity market examination.
Bonds and Long-Term Debt Markets
The objective of this module is to address the bond and long-term debt market. It introduces the student to the vocabulary and mechanics of the bond and long-term debt market in South Africa and internationally and prepares the student for the South African Institute of Financial Market’s bond and long-term debt market examination.
International Derivatives
The objective of this module is to introduce the student to the derivative market, concentrating on essential building blocks such as definitions, market mechanics and the scope of the market.
Money Market
The text is aimed at the introductory level and little prior knowledge of financial markets is required. The money market consists of a wide range of financial instruments and to cover each one in detail will defeat the objectives of this guide. The reader will therefore find that only the most important securities that trade on a daily basis in the South African money market are discussed.
International Foreign Exchange
The text is aimed at the introductory level and little prior knowledge of financial markets is required. The Forex market is a major financial market often at the cutting edge of product development. The reader will find that the working of the Forex market and its instruments are discussed.
