Certificate in financial management

Introduction
The Certificate in Financial Management aims to develop a wide range of key financial skills and techniques which are relevant to professionals and managers in all sectors of the economy.
Duration
The certificate is a one year programme running from February until the end of November. Lectures will be presented on specified Monday evenings and/or Saturday mornings. In total there are 20 contact sessions during the year, being 5 per subject– duration of a session will be two-and-a-half hours.
Course Content
The certificate course will cover 4 subjects . See below for more information on the objectives of each subject.
Certification
Successful candidates will obtain a Certificate from the University of Johannesburg at the end of the year.
Evaluation
- Students will be required to sit for one examination and complete at least one project per subject.
- Students need to obtain a minimum of 50% per subject for all 4 subjects to be awarded the Certificate.
- Students are not required to pass all 4 subjects in one year.
Admission Requirements
- Any person holding a university degree or technikon diploma (in any field) or membership of a professional body meets the minimum entry requirement.
- Alternatively, managers who hold sufficient management experience may apply as a mature student.
- Self-employed managers also qualify to apply.
Fees
- The fees for 2010 will be approximately R11,560 per year (including module material) half of which is payable at registration – excluding registration fees.

Subjects
Subject 1: INTERPRETATION OF FINANCIAL STATEMENTS
Topics:Measuring and reporting the financial position and performance
Accounting for limited companies
Measuring and reporting cash flows
Analysing & interpreting financial statements
Reporting the financial results of groups of companies
Expanding the annual financial report
Objectives: To develop an understanding and appreciation of the contents of financial statements, the meaning of terminology used in the statements, how to interpret the performance of an organization using the contents of the financial statements and the various accounting concepts which underpin the preparation of the statements.
Subject 2: PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT/MANAGEMENT ACCOUNTING
Topics:Relevant costs for decision making
Cost-volume-profit analysis
Full costing
Costing and prising in a competitive environment
Budgeting
Accounting for control
Measuring and controlling divisional performance
Strategic Management Accounting
Objectives: To provide an understanding of how performance can be managed through both financial and non-financial measures. The subject considers performance management from the perspectives of planning an organization’s operations to enable it to achieve its objectives, measuring its performance against those plans and managing the operations of the organization towards those organisational objectives.
Subject 3: FINANCIAL STRATEGY/FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT
Topics:Financial planning and projected financial statements
Making capital investment decisions
Financing a business
The cost of capital and capital structure decision
Developing a dividend policy
Managing working capital
Measuring and managing for shareholder value
Mergers, takeovers and the valuation of shares
Objectives: To provide insight to the world of financial strategy – when, how and where finance should be raised, which method(s) of financing should be used, which projects are worth undertaking, how to minimize working capital investment and how to value businesses.
Subject 4: RISK MANAGEMENT
Topics:- Risk Policy
- Risk audits and risk mapping
- Reporting of risk management
Corporate Governance
- Theoretical perspectives of corporate governance
- Corporate governance frameworks, codes and systems
- Role of the executive in corporate governance
- Internal control: Internal audit, audit committees and organisational control
- Implementation of corporate governance
- Reporting of corporate governance
Management of Financial Risk
- Risk measurement
- Types of financial risk: Gearing, interest rate risk, foreign exchange rate risk, credit risk, cash flow
- Debt versus equity
- Hedging techniques
- Use of derivatives
- Insurance
Objectives: Develops knowledge and understanding of the main theories and frameworks of risk management. It enables managers to identify and manage risk in their organisations. After considering how a company can manage all aspects of risk through a corporate governance framework, the paper then focuses on the particular area of financial risk. It looks in detail at the technique and models available to measure and control all aspects of financial risk within an organisation.

All candidates are required to complete a Departmental application form as well as a University application form.
