Introduction

In modern business, finance is implicitly included in virtually every aspect of decision making. The University of Johannesburg (UJ) recognises this fact and has developed a broad approach to assisting individuals in maximizing their potential and achieving success for their business. In this light finance for non financial experts aims to expose individuals to aspects of finance typically encountered in the every day business environment.

Duration

The course duration is 5 days.

During the first 4 days you will attend facilitated sessions during which we will discuss the theory underlying the different topics. The application will be demonstrated by means of case studies, role play and exercises. Please feel free to bring examples of your company’s financial statements or management accounts. This will be used in practical sessions to enhance the benefit you will derive from the course.

On day 5 you will be assessed on the course content.

Course Content

The following topics will be covered during the course:
    o Finance contextualized
    o Understanding Financial Statements
    o Cost management and short-term decisions
    o Working capital management
    o Budgeting
    o The Principles of Value
    o Financial Statement Analysis

Certification

On successful completion you will be issued a certificate from the University of Johannesburg.

Evaluation

Participants will write a test on day 5 of the course.

Participant Profile

If you have limited education or work experience in the field of finance and believe that an increased understanding of finance could assist you in the execution of your duties the finance for non-financial expert course is tailor-made for your needs. The profiles of possible attendees are business entrepreneurs, operational managers, government officials, marketers, HR personnel, lawyers etc.

Admission

To ensure personal attention participant numbers are limited and students will therefore be accommodated on a first-come, first-served basis.

Fees

Your investment is R9 950 per person. This includes tuition, study material, lunches and refreshments. On registration you will be supplied with a textbook for reference purposes as well as a financial calculator.

Please note that 50% of the fee is payable when booking for the course and the remainder on registration. You will be liable for 50% of the course fee should you cancel within 14 days prior to the course commencing.

Application and Administration

All candidates are required to complete a Departmental application form as well as a University application form.

It is essential that you supply certified copies of all qualifications, Identity Document and any other documents as stated on the application form, together with your application.
