There is rising awareness of public health in South Africa and worldwide, owing in part to the increased amounts of foods produced domestically, and the size and diversity of the food and beverage industry – which spans South Africa’s dynamic hospitality and tourism sectors.
Another factor that influences food safety training is increasing public concern for chemical, physical or biological contamination of food, which has brought about the need for Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point or HACCP courses and training.
The advantages of training your staff in basic food hygiene include identifying and preventing hazards from contaminating food, which are based soundly on scientific principles. Food and beverage safety training also helps companies compete in a world market, by reinforcing food standards that are internationally recognised.
In South Africa, legislation that concerns food workers is administered by the Department of Health, and falls under the Foodstuffs, Cosmetics and Disinfectants Act 54 of 1972. It is vital that those who work with food know how to wash their hands, what to wear, the rules of personal hygiene and more.
