...moreSouth Africa suffers from a digital divide - which refers to the inequality in access to information and communication technologies. According to the Global Competitiveness Report (GCR) for 2008/2009 local uptake of cell phones has been fairly impressive, particularly with reference to mobile phones, but computer, internet and broadband usage have lagged behind.
IT training is essential for business and education if South Africa is to remain competitive in domestic as well as international markets. South Africa is ranked 45th out of 143 countries for education and training; however, this ranking plummets to 104th for quality of primary education, 110th for quality of higher education and training, and a dismal 132nd in terms of quality of maths and science education (Gem Report, 2008).
According to research conducted at the UCT Graduate School of Business, these educational levels have a significant impact on both the likelihood a business will have and use computer, and whether or not it will have internet access.
The benefits of attending ICT training seminars in a corporate environment include reduced business costs in the form of time saved, better advertising, organisation and networking.
Businesses also gain increased access to information regarding the supply and demand for products and services in the developing world. ICT seminars are an opportunity to understand new products and applications that can save businesses hours in self-taught hardship.
