President of the National Teachers Union (Natu), Allen Thompson has passed on after contracting Covid-19. 

More than 6 million Covid-19 tests have been conducted in South Africa, with 1 113 349 confirmed positive cases being identified. Now at what seems to be the peak of the second wave, the Covid-19 death toll stands at 30 011.

Fear remains as teachers and learners will be going back to school in 2 weeks. The second wave of Covid-19 has made a teacher union call for the government to make teachers a priority. 


The government has been working on a plan to roll out the vaccine. The vaccine is set to arrive soon and a 3-phase plan is in the works to make the roll out smooth. 

Customers can expect to pay more for petrol this month as the the price is set to increase on Wednesday, 6 January 2021.

SABC Education has partnered with the Department of Basic Education to launch a Matric Results service. Candidates will be able to access their results across various platforms.

Now that matric exams are out of the way, teachers have started marking papers written by more than 1 million candidates this year. Results are set to be released on 23 February 2021. 

Unisa will be closing its self-help registration facilities, as registration will be done fully online in 2021. This comes after the recent second wave of Covid-19, which has seen South Africa's positive cases spiking beyond the first peak of infections.

A variant of Covid-19 is said to be behind the fast pace of the second wave of the virus. Health Minister, Dr Zweli Mkhize held a media briefing, saying the variant was discovered by scientists in South Africa.  

Covid-19 cases have spiked in the recent weeks as South Africa has been facing a second wave of infections. Health Minister, Zweli Mkhize is concerned that the country has reached a positivity rate of 21%.
