6 ways to overcome procrastination

We’ve all had days where we procrastinate, which is an “intentional delay of tasks”. To break this pattern or habit of procrastination requires motivation.

“Get the most out of your work day”

There are many reasons for procrastination such as the ‘challenge of getting a lot done in a limited time period’ or even perfectionism , that you want to do it so perfectly that the standards are too high to even feel motivated to start. The root of this behaviour is often fear.

The first way to overcome procrastination is firstly to be aware and admit that the problem exists and then secondly come up with ways to use your time in the best way possible.

HERE ARE 6 WAYS TO OVERCOME PROCRASTINATION:

1. IDENTIFY THE RESULT
Identify the result of the action completed then visualise or list the benefits of completing the task. How will you feel if you achieve this and complete it? Will you have more time to do what you want to do instead of what you have to do?

2. HAVE A PLAN
Start with a time management plan. Calculate the hours you have and estimate how long it will take to do the task you are putting off, break the task up into segments or time slots and start to work through this. For instance if you need to do an article , start with research or brain storm with others to get ideas and then put the ideas down and from there start putting the ideas into a paragraph – allocate time for this.

3. USE MOMENTUM
Use momentum to your advantage. Once you come from a meeting or activity – start immediately don’t take a break after the activity or meeting. Get going on the work allocated. Even if it’s to put a few ideas on paper to start the process.

4. LIST IT
Make a list the items or tasks each morning you need to do to give your day structure and start with what you feel comfortable with but complete this and avoid distractions.

5. BE REALISTIC
Do not take on more than you have time for, you only have 8 or 9 hours in a work day; be realistic about how you can achieve the task.

6. FIND SUPPORT
Be honest with yourself. If you need support then make sure that you find the right people to assist you to get started and ask someone to be an accountability partner.
