The DHL Gradstar Competition is an initiative that recognises the top University Graduates across South Africa based on leadership and work readiness qualities. The programme offers students the opportunity to take part in workshops hosted by potential employers where students are able to connect with successful business mentors that provide students with great industry exposure.
The competition is marketed to all colleges and varsity career centres across South Africa. Students are selected from varying regions as the competition is widely publicised in traditional press as well as online- to offer every single graduate the opportunity to enter. Upon entering- finalists undergo a four-phase judging process.
Each year there are thousands of Gradstar entries and this year was no different as Gradstar DHL stated that they received over 8 000 applications. Of the 8 000, only 100 graduates became finalists, where 20 of these finalists are Boston Media House graduates. This competition does not merely offer grads the opportunity to win the Gradstar title as many of the 100 finalists receive job offers from predominant employers as a result of the recognition students receive from the competition.
Becoming a Gradstar finalist is the cherry on top of a student’s already proud achievement of graduating in their desired field and, in addition, the process and experience that it provides is an excellent CV topper as graduates receive the much-needed exposure and insight that very few new ‘grads’ would have under their belt. To be recognised for leadership abilities at the beginning of one’s career enables graduates to apply for the jobs they really want and get offered the interviews that so many graduates do not get called for.
Employers are in demand of experienced individuals- who have the relevant knowledge and ability to perform, it is understandable that graduates do not always have the desired experience that employers seek, unless one studies part-time and is already in a position that aligns well with their qualification. Graduates crave the opportunity to gain experience in their field. Initiatives such as the Gradstar competition provides the experience that employers require from any graduate who applies to work for them.
