Congress of South African Students (COSAS) is calling for government to vaccinate learners. This comes as many learners returned to school, following their winter break.
The Congress marched to the Polokwane Health Department on Thursday in an attempt to get the department on board with vaccinating learners.
This is despite the government's policy to vaccinate the population according to age groups, from oldest to youngest.
Provincial secretary of COSAS Limpopo, Skhalo Mahladisa said Limpopo schools have not been able to accommodate learners for some time and Covid has only made the situation worse for learners.
"We believe that Covid has imposed on us extraordinary circumstances, and we need an extraordinary response. In this regard, we are calling for the vaccination of all learners." he said.
Mahladisa added that the provincial education department has also fallen short on its promise to provide meals to learners through the National School Nutrition Programme (NSNP).
"The Nutrition Programme of the department is not being implemented, there are no feeding schemes in schools, learners are not eating ever since the reopening of schools, more than 20 000 learners have not been eating ever since."
"We understand that learners who are learning here from quintile 1 to 3 schools are children of the working class...We are looking out for this feeding scheme so that learners can be able to be taken care of."
In July, the High Court of South Africa ordered the National Department of Basic Education to provide learners with school meals.
This followed the department's failure to provide Equal Education with updated meal plans for the NSNP. Equal Education then took the department to court for its failure and demanded that learners receive meals even on days when they are not at school.
Equal Education is hopeful that the department will follow through on the court ruling and provide learners with meals.
"We are hopeful that the new plans that the DBE and provincial education departments have been ordered to develop to improve the rollout of the NSNP, can guarantee that it reaches every single learner who qualifies for it,“ Equal Education said in a statement.
