Department Slams Fake News About Schools

The Basic Education Department has spoken out against fake posts circulating on social media.

The fake posts claim that schools will close from 26 May 2021 and reopen on 28 June 2021. The department has denied this claim and dismissed it as fake news.

“The Department of Basic Education is aware of a manipulated image doing the rounds purporting to be an announcement from Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga,” the department said in a statement.

The department has urged the public to verify sources of information before sharing on social media.

“This type of malicious content is created with the express intent to cause confusion and mislead the public. We condemn such actions in the strongest possible terms.

"The department will use credible media platforms to communicate should there be developments in the sector,” the department said.

Earlier this month, the department suspended contact sports. This was following a recent increase in Covid-19 cases being reported in schools.

"During the last week of term 1, school sports activity related Covid-19 outbreaks in Gauteng Province were reported and have been gradually increasing in Term 2."

As a result, no contact sporting activities will be taking place until all cluster outbreaks have been contained.

Although contact sports have been suspended, the department said non-contact sports will be allowed to continue taking place, provided that all Covid-19 guidelines are followed.

"Non-contact sport training in schools can continue provided that all social distancing hygiene and safety measures are observed and there is no physical contact between participants during training." said the department.
