Employees are being urged to apply on time for Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF). This is the message that came from the Department of Labour during an advocacy session that took place at Senwabarwana, Mosibudi Crèche Schoonveld Village on 22 November 2022.
Employer Service supervisor, Johannes Ngoetjana, said:
It is important to apply for UIF right after the employment contract ends.
Ngoetjana said advised that clients should check for their payslips and whether employers are deducting UIF on their behalf.
Employees are advised to apply before the period lapses. This should be done using U-Filing, the UIF's online system which is used to to lodge UIF claims.
Documents required to lodge UIF claims includes ID, payslips, and bank statement while other documents such as UI2.8, UI2.11, UI2.10, and UI2.7 will be supplied in the office.
The UIF is responsible for providing UIF benefits in the following situations:
- Maternity
- Illness
- Unemployment
- Death
- Adoption
- Parental and commissioning parental benefits
The failure to declare workers and pay contributions is not only against the law, but also means that employees who require relief may not be able to claim it.
If employers are found to be non-compliant, they will be issued with an undertaking or compliance order. The employer will then have 14 days to make an effort to comply before the matter is referred to the labour court for prosecution.
