False Bay TVET College opens new campus

False Bay TVET College has officially opened its new campus in Mitchells Plain, Cape Town.

The new campus was made possible through an agreement signed with the Western Cape Education Department that allowed the College access to the under-utilised primary school site in Merrydale Road. The site is in close proximity to the old College campus (at Spine Road High School).

While the College will initially utilise one wing of the existing school building, the College expects the demand in the populous community for high-quality tertiary and vocational training to require expansion to a fully-fledged campus in the near future.

The old primary school was renovated and refurbished at a cost of R3.5 million, with energy-saving ‘green’ campus features installed, creating a modern and comfortable environment for the effective delivery of quality education and training. Among its educational facilities the new campus boasts two air-conditioned computer labs, 10 classrooms, an Open Learning Centre and an Educare Didactics Simulation venue.

Care was taken to create a safe supporting environment, including undercover relaxation areas for student breaks, a well-equipped cafeteria providing light snacks and refreshments, 24-hour security and a manned access-controlled entrance gate.

The completed site, one of five False Bay TVET College campuses, now offers students affordable, industry-tailored courses, in an attractive modern space with easy access to public and private transport.

The Mitchells Plain Campus offers full-time programmes in Business, Financial and Public Management and Educare. Part-time programmes include courses in Public or Business Management, Electrical and Motor Mechanics (N1-N2), Entrepreneurship and Computerised Financial Systems.

While it will accept students from any community, the new campus primarily aims to recruit students from the local area. “If you reside and study in Mitchells Plain, you really get a deeper sense of what the community needs,” says Souchan Gasant-Jackson, the Head of Mitchells Plain Campus. “As it offers both full-time and part-time study options, False Bay TVET College serves the growing demand for a distance learning faculty. This is an ideal study option for residents wanting to further their studies.”
