Are you thinking about studying further after school? A university education opens doors to people who are fortunate enough to get in.

South Africa has a number of prestigious universities producing highly competent doctors, lawyers, teachers and experts in practically every academic field.

Universities have strict entrance requirements and overcrowding also narrows the intake each year. However those who manage to enter a study programme and graduate have greater access to work and research opportunities.

To obtain a bachelors degree, which is the foundational qualification of any field, generally requires three years of full time study at a South African university. Thereafter students can choose to further their studies by completing an Honours, Master's or Doctorate programme.

The academic year is split into two semesters, the first from early February to early June, and the second from mid-July to late November.

There are three university categories. The traditional universities are academic in focus; universities of technology also known as technikons are more vocational; and comprehensive universities, offer a combination of both types of qualification.

Universities offer academic facilities as well as a range of social activities and clubs, and various support systems. This gives students the opportunity to grow in different areas and find a career path that matches their abilities and interests.
