The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) is reminding parents and guardians to complete their online applications before tonight’s deadline.
Phase two of the department’s online admissions system for learners going to Grade 1 and Grade 8 for the 2022 academic year will close at midnight.
The department says that more than 280 000 applications were received during the second phase of admissions. As of Thursday, 250 450 applications for learners going to Grade 1 along with 30 409 Grade 8 applications were received.
Gauteng Education Department Spokesperson, Steve Mabona says they are quite happy with the number of applications that have been received.
He explained that the original intention was to accommodate only Grade 1 applications and learners going to grade 8 from independent schools during the second phase. However, the number of outstanding applications led the department to open up for Grade 8 applications.
Mabona says that the number of people who have applied shows that parents and guardians understand how to use the system. The of the online system also prevents people from crowing at schools. The placement process will begin from 15 October 2021 to 30 November 2021. Parents will receive updates via SMS from the department.
The Department did not want to exclude anybody and opened up more than 40 walk-in centres around the province to assist parents with connectivity challenges.
Gauteng MEC for Education Panyaza Lesufi has thanked parents, guardians and staff for playing their part in making phase two of the online admissions a success.
He said, “we are pleased at the success of the Online Admissions system so far, more so through the new two-phased approach which we introduced this year. We are thankful to everyone who played a role during this application period and we are hopeful for a successful placement period in the coming days”.
