According to the Gauteng Education Department (GDE) as of 30 November 2022, a total of 135 465 Grade 1 learners and 132 727 Grade 8 learners had already been placed in schools for the 2023 academic year.
To give parents a second chance to apply, the GDE opened its online admission system for late learner applications on 20 December 2022.
However, the department has cautioned parents they will have limited options available to them as only schools with available spaces will open for admission during this stage.
During the initial application period, parents were allowed to apply to a maximum of five schools. This time, parents are strictly only allowed to apply at one school.
“Each parent may apply to one school only. The learner will be automatically placed at the one school applied to,” said the department.
When doing the application, parents will be able to immediately submit and upload documents via the online system.
Parents experiencing challenges uploading the required documents online, may hand deliver them to schools from 11 January 2023 until 31 January 2023.
The GDE late applications will close on, 31 January 2023 at 00:01 am.
To apply, parents can register on http://gdeadmissions.gov.za to secure their children a spot for the 2023 academic year.
