The Department of Transport has warned motorists that the grace period for the renewal of driver's licence s will end on 31 August 2021. The grace period was initially put into place to combat the large backlog that was created by the Covid-19 lockdown and problems with the department's online system.
The licence renewal process ensures Motorists that they have a valid driver's licence card.
The Automobile Association of South Africa’s Layton Beard  said that while coronavirus made the backlog worse, the problem with the department's system existed before covid-19 lockdown. This is because motorists can only renew their driver's licence  in person.
Beard said that any number of factors could play a role in preventing motorists from renewing their driver's licence . ‘[getting] your driver's licence  card is the problem. If you go in there and the machines don't work, the fingerprint machines, the eye test machines or the computers are offline, this just means that the capacity is reduced again.’
Beard suggests that the department of transport should completely change the system and make its services available online for motorists. He said that while the government says that more than seven hundred thousand people have been helped due to the interventions made by the department, the majority of South Africans are not being serviced.
Beard believes that the government needs to come up with a ‘sustainable and long lasting’ solution and believes that another extension would not help as this would just push the problem down the road.
Drivers licence  renewals will cost motorists around R140(this may vary depending on the province) and a further R40 for drivers who require a temporary driver's licence . Motorists with expired driver's licence cards will now be at the mercy of traffic offices and are encouraged to provide proof that they have  made attempts to renew their driver's licence  card.
