Despite the low number of infections, Health Minister Dr Joe Phaahla has called on South Africans to get vaccinated against Covid-19 before the fourth wave of infections starts.
Speaking at the 2021 Rotary Health Family Day, Phaahla urged people to take the life saving jab. He explained how vaccines have been used in the past to combat various different diseases.
“We have all learned over the last 20 months that it is not over and that there is going to be another resurgence of the infection and therefore we must be ready and protect all our people.”
The minister has welcomed the announcement that Rotary International will be teaming up with COVAX and GAVI to ensure equitable access to the Covid-19 vaccine. He says the announcement will ensure that disadvantaged countries will have access to the Covid-19 vaccine.
This comes after months of lobbying from civil groups and politicians, including President Cyril Ramaphosa, who Phaahla praises for his role in highlighting vaccine inequality. It is estimated that around 6% of people living in poor and low income countries have been vaccinated against Covid-19.
Over 23 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines have been administered since South Africa's vaccine rollout began. Phaahla says the country still has still a long way to go until they reach the 70% target. The country would have to give an additional 27 million people the vaccine in order to reach the target
He said, “Many of our colleagues in the SADC region are still struggling to access vaccines for their people. However, we are struggling to get the people to come to the vaccine. It’s embarrassing.”
The minister says the target could be reached if South Africans work together and go get vaccinated.
