The South African Social Security received criticism after adjusting the qualifying criteria for the R350 grant. The ending of the National State of Disaster in April 2022 meant that the legislation under which the grant was provided changed.

These adjustments to the qualifying criteria also raised concern among the grant’s beneficiaries with many wanting to know how often applicants must apply for the grant.

You do not have to reapply for the R350 grant. Reapplication for the grant is only required once. However, grant beneficiaries have to answer questions every three months with regard to their financial situations. This, as their financial circumstances may have changed.

Sassa explained, “There is no need for clients to apply each month. However please check the website after every 3 months to answer a few questions and check if you still need the grant. If you do not need the grant, please do not apply”.

Addressing the adjustments, the Social Development Department’s Brenda Sibeko revealed that grant applicants may need to answer questions every three months so it can be determined if they still need the grant.
