The South African Finance Minister has announced increases in Excise Duties and the introduction of a new tax during his maiden budget speech.

Minister Enoch Godongwana has announced that the government will introduce a new tax of R2.90 on vaping products from January 2023. The minister also revealed that a new tax will also be introduced on beer powders.

The minister said excise duties on alcohol and tobacco products will increase by between 4.5% and 6.5%.

Here’s The Price Increases Due To Increases In Excise Duties On Alcohol And Tobacco Products

  • a 340ml can of beer or cider will increase by 11c;
  • a 750ml bottle of wine will increase by 17c;
  • a bottle of sparkling wine will increase by 76c;
  • a bottle of spirits will increase by R4.83;
  • a packet of cigarettes will cost an additional R1.03;
  • 25 grams of piped tobacco will cost an extra 37c; 
  • a 23-gram cigar will be R6.77 more expensive.
