South African non-profit organisations (NPOs), universities and other higher education institutions have ongoing challenges when it comes to remaining sustainable. It’s becoming more apparent that they require qualified practitioners who can attract resources.
To meet this need, Inyathelo: The South African Institute for Advancement, is offering an accredited short course in July to build professional knowledge and practice using Advancement as an entry point to sustainability. This approach refers to the building, maintaining and improving of support, skills and funds for an organisation and institution.
Developed in partnership with Rhodes University’s Business School, the accredited short course (NQF level seven, with seven credits) covers subjects ranging from communication and marketing, to external relations and fundraising. To date, more than 70 professionals in the higher education and NPO sector have qualified through this training course, which is now in its fifth year.
Nazli Abrahams, Programme Director at Inyathelo, explains the rationale behind this qualification: “We are offering an integrated course that brings together communication, marketing, public liaison, external relations and fundraising into an engine that both drives and serves strategic thinking through an organisation or institution.
“This learning develops understanding of and support for all of the programmes and activities, with the goal of creating a climate that positions your NPO or institution for donor investment.”
Training for the Certificate in Advancement and Resource Mobilisation will take place at Inyathelo’s Cape Town offices in Woodstock from 17-22 July.
Abrahams says that the course’s six modules will have a strong focus on the relationship management aspect of fundraising, rather than the transaction. In addition, there will be discussion and evaluation of media advances (as relevant to long-term sustainability) and the mobilisation of resources; practical case studies, and experiences from professionals in the field.
The course is designed within the South African context: “A crucial factor in the preparation for the training we deliver, is a body of scholarship that is grounded in African realities and experiences,” Abrahams says. “That is, ways of thinking and doing Advancement that are suited to the multiple African contexts in which NPOs, institutions and universities operate.”
This certificate course is a part of Inyathelo and its partners’ long term aim to make Advancement an area of professional study in Africa, affording practitioners a specialist postgraduate university qualification.
Applicants should ideally hold a bachelors degree or equivalent qualification. A minimum of one year’s full-time relevant practical business, organisational or consulting experience (within the fundraising environment) would be beneficial. Applicants must also be proficient in English, with good writing skills.
Prior learning may also be recognised if applicants have at least a matric and a minimum of three years’ relevant experience.
The course costs R11,500 with full payment upfront. This fee includes registration costs, all course materials, teas and lunches during the programme. It does not include accommodation, travelling or related costs. Inyathelo offers a Civil Society Sustainability Centre with limited computers and access to the internet should participants require them; however it is advised that participants bring their own tablets/laptops in order to easily access the e-materials provided.
Participants are also required to complete an assignment, to be submitted after the course.
Closing date for applications is 5 July 2017. Spaces are limited and will be allocated on a first-come, first-pay basis to those who meet the admission requirements.
