The Western Cape Education Department’s (WCED) application period ran from 13 March until 14 April, with late applications until end of May. During this admissions window, the Education Department received applications for 156 150 learners for the 2024 school year.

“With parents applying for more than one school for their children, the total number of individual applications for placement and transfer to schools received was 503 763,” indicated the department in a statement.

However, the WCED allowed parents and caregivers to submit late applications until 25 May 2023, and these applications will only be considered by schools after they have considered the applications received on time.

Recently, in a statement, the Provincial Education Department has shared:

Parents and caregivers whose applications have been accepted at one or more schools have to confirm their choice today.

Learners that have received multiple placement offers have been encouraged to accept or decline their school of choice via the department’s online portal as soon as possible.

Should parents not do so, they will essentially be ‘double parking’ on the system, stopping schools from offering these places to other applicants until they make their choice.

Whilst the system will also automatically confirm the top-ranked school that has made an offer, this will be followed by other offers being removed.

Western Cape Education has committed that it will leave no stone unturned in the department’s efforts to place every learner whose parents applied on time as quickly as possible.

Here’s How Parents Can Confirm Their Placement Offer:

  1. Go to the WCED admissions website
  2. Log in with your WCED login using your username and password
  3. Go to “Track Application Status"
  4. Select the name of the learner
  5. Under “Application Status”, it will inform the parent as to whether their application was a) Successful, b) Unsuccessful, or c) Has been placed on the waiting list.
  6. The parent must then either “Withdraw” or “Confirm” their application.

This will be followed by the system activating the first successful option where parents have not confirmed on 20 June 2023.

While the official admission application period for public schools in the Western Cape is closed, work must still be done before learners know which school they will attend during the 2024 school year. The education department has revealed when admission activities will take place to ensure all learners are placed.
