Despite the lifting of restrictions, medical professionals are calling on individuals to get vaccinated as the Covid-19 pandemic is still around.

The South African Medical Association (SAMA) supports the government's decision to end the NSD but is calling on vaccination campaigns to be intensified around the country.

SAMA said, “SAMA is of the view that the ending of the national State of Disaster in April will further benefit the economy and that the time is right for the easing of this legislation.

“It believes that the Covid-19 pandemic is now being better controlled and managed and that the country’s healthcare system is better placed to deal with the virus than before” added the association.

In the latest 24-hour cycle, 1 538 new Covid-19 cases were recorded in South Africa. The positivity rate now stands at 6.2% which was higher than Monday’s 5.4%. The total number of laboratory-confirmed cases of the virus stands at 3 725 177.

More than 100 000 people have died due to Covid-19 related illnesses. The National Department of Health has confirmed that there may be a backlog in the reporting of deaths related to the virus.

The department reported 15 new deaths, of which seven occurred in the past 24 – 48 hours.
