Beneficiaries of the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) grants use their Gold Cards to access their monthly social grants and make transactions. However, many of these grant beneficiaries’ cards are set to expire in the coming months.

The South African Post Office (SAPO) anticipates that around 5 million social grant beneficiaries will be at their branches to collect new Sassa gold cards. The entity has revealed how it plans to deal with the administration of millions of new cards.

In a press release, grant beneficiaries whose Sassa gold cards are expiring in March 2023 were encouraged to visit Post Office branches to collect a new card.

Priority will be given to those with cards expiring in March

SAPO plans to use a staggered approach for the distribution of new Sassa gold cards to beneficiaries. This will most likely see beneficiaries issued new cards in the month their old card is expiring.

Here’s How Many Sassa Cards Will Expire In The Coming Months

March 2023: 159,466 expiring Sassa Gold Cards

April 2023: 861,952 expiring Sassa Gold Cards

May 2023: 2,769,735 expiring Sassa Gold Cards

June 2023: 1,836,826 expiring Sassa Gold Cards

Sassa grant beneficiaries must have their Identification Document (ID) and their expiring Sassa gold card when collecting a new card.

Only the beneficiary of a grant will be able to collect a new gold card. Alternatively, a Sassa-appointed procurator.

Beneficiaries of different grants will only be issued new cards on designated days.

Mondays and Tuesdays have been dedicated to the issuance of new gold cards to beneficiaries of the Older Persons and Disability Grants.

Beneficiaries of the Sassa Child Support grants will be able to collect their new Sassa gold cards from Wednesdays to Saturdays. No new Sassa cards will be issued on Sundays.
