Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Dr Blade Nzimande says he strongly condemns the torching of the Oval student residence at the Westville campus of the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) on Monday the 12th of October 2020.
Nzimande urged the university’s management team to work alongside law enforcement to bring those responsible for this shameful and outrageous act to book.
“The destruction of university property is a criminal offence and all those engaging in such acts must be arrested and face the full might of the law”.
The minister also called upon the university’s student and staff communities to isolate, identify and expose those who continue to vandalise University property so that the culprits can be brought to book.
“These are criminals who must be totally removed from our institutions, they do not deserve to be within our institutions but belongs to jail,” emphasised the Minister.
Nzimade said that whilst the government continues to invest billions in improving the infrastructure of our Tertiary Education and Training institution, the university community must do its part to preserve and protect the existing infrastructure.
University Vice-Chancellors have been ordered to tighten up on-campus security measures to prevent future acts of criminality and to protect the freedom and lives of staff and students alike.
