The South African Local Government Association (SALGA) has rolled-out a national induction and training programme for local councillors.
The week-long training programme, is aimed at helping councilors familiarize themselves with their political role in municipal governance, development and service delivery.
"They need to understand the overall legislative framework guiding municipal governance, their respective roles and responsibilities in that regard including the implementation of national and provincial programmes and the management of resources of their municipality.
"This induction is to ensure a general understanding of roles and responsibilities and various policies and procedures,' a statement released by SALGA said.
A key instrument and component of the induction would be a practical manual titled "Handbook for Councillors', published recently.
The handbook not only summarises relevant policy and legislation guiding local government, but also highlights the specific roles of councillors.
