Millions of South Africans applied for the R350 grant when it was first introduced in 2020, but now many will be left looking elsewhere for income as it comes to an end.
The R350 grant will expire on 31 January 2021, as the government says it no longer has the funds to keep the grant going.
Beneficiaries of the R350 grant will not receive payments in February. Payment dates are as follows for all grants:
- Older Person’s Grants - Wednesday 3 February 2021
- Disability Grants - Thursday 4 February 2021
- All other grants - Friday 5 February 2021
Beneficiaries who receive more than one grant and claim payments for older persons or disability grants will be paid at the same time. These payments will be available either on Wednesday 3 February or Thursday 4 February.
Sassa has not yet confirmed a date for when beneficiaries will receive the last payment of the R350 grant.
Government has been going back and forth discussing the possibility of introducing a Basic Income Grant.
Unlike the R350 grant, the Basic Income Grant would be given to all South Africans, regardless of their employment status.
However, the ANC social transformation subcommittee said extending the R350 grant will be better than introducing a new grant.
This is because the policy for the grant would have to first be drawn up and approved by the government before making it available to the public.
“Given the current crisis and the need for the urgent decisions to address the devastating humanitarian crisis facing the country, it would be opportune for the NEC to exercise its leadership and authority to provide/amend policy guidance within the current administration.” said the subcommittee in a presentation.
The subcommittee proposed for the R350 grant to be used while the government works on a policy for the Basic Income grant.
