During a briefing with health experts on Tuesday night, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize admitted that South Africa doesn’t qualify to move down to lower levels of the national lockdown just yet.
On Monday, the minister said he was not surprised by the rise in coronavirus infections but the rate at which they were rising was worrisome.
Mkhize said that this is according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), which has set criteria for countries to meet before easing its lockdown.
“The WHO has said that we need to start showing that the numbers are declining, and infections are not increasing. We are nowhere near that.”
Mkhize says that community transmission remains low except for in the Western and Eastern Cape.
