Taking control of your future development

“Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time?’ This is one of those standard interview questions that always gets asked. But when was the last time you actually sat down and thought about this question with regards to your own life and career? If your response is, ‘never’ then you owe it to yourself to take 2 minutes to imagine you are the Interviewer, interviewing yourself (strange I know) but how would you answer…and more importantly once you have answered, what are you doing to take control of your future development?

Let’s be honest, we are all busy, very busy…that is just how life is these days, there is never enough time in the day. So, it is easy to get caught up in the day-to-day routine and grind of work and home life and it is easy to ‘forget’ about your own developmental and career advancement needs and put that on the back burner, especially when you are juggling work and home life.

And when you think about it, in today’s economic climate, promotions and advantages go to those who are best prepared for them.

Plus to add into the mix, the explosive growth in some sectors such a technology has dramatically advanced the job market by creating a multitude of new opportunities and jobs that didn’t even exist 10 years ago. On the flipside of this development, many traditional industries are struggling and I recently saw a segment on CNN that focused on miners in the US who have been retrenched completely retooling their skills sets and learning IT skills to remain employable…makes you think though how times have changed when a 50 year old man who had spent his life down in the mines is now sitting behind an Apple Mac working on SEO campaigns for a cold drink company!

None of us can afford to allow the stress and pressures of our day jobs to distract us from our own professional development and career planning. At the very least, you should be keeping on top of the changes in your field…whatever it is that you do, change is occurring so rapidly and almost on a daily basis that before you know it…it could be you that suffers from professional obsolescence!

I read recently that today, training is a necessity, a life-long endeavour (both on a personal and business front) and it is your responsibility, not the company you work for! No matter how sophisticated your companies training operation – the reality is that in today’s tight economic climate a lot of companies are slashing their training budgets to the bone (a practice that I think is crazy). So, if you are lucky enough to work for a company that invests in you and sends you on training – GREAT! But if you don’t, how do you stay abreast of the ever-evolving developments in your field, your industry as well as management and technological applications?
