After being suspended for almost two weeks, the University of South Africa (Unisa) has announced that its graduation ceremonies will resume.
Unisa announced that graduation ceremonies will resume on Tuesday, 29 March 2022. Graduations will resume as per the planned graduation schedule.
The university has said they have been in contact with all the graduate designates to advise them on their respective graduation dates and times.
Graduation ceremonies were put on hold after protests disrupted ceremonies at the university. The National Education, Health, and Allied Workers' Union (NEHAWU) explained that the protest was in response to Unisa's decision to pull out of a salary adjustment agreement with workers.
Unisa explained that their human resources department did not comply with the resolutions on the salary adjustments, which exposed Unisa to a collision course with organised labour.
The university said that alternative arrangements will be made for students whose graduation ceremonies were disrupted due to the protests.
Unisa said, “The university apologises once more for the inconvenience caused by the postponement of the graduations. Plans are already in progress for alternative graduation opportunities for the affected graduate designates”.
