The Nelson Mandela University (NMU) is mourning the loss of a student who passed away over the weekend.
It is understood that two students, a male and a female, who were attending a Democratic Alliance Students Organization (DASO) event, drowned at a beach at Sardinia Bay in Gqeberha.
The female student managed to swim to shore but passed away while being attended to by paramedics. The male student has not yet been found.
Minister of Higher Education and Training, Science and Innovation, Blade Nzimande has extended his condolences to the University and its students.
In a social media post he said, ‘I am saddened by the untimely passing of one of the Nelson Mandela University students and the drowning of another who is yet to be found’.
‘I wish all divers and rescue teams well in their search and rescue exercise as they locate the missing student. I pass my heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased student, University Management and students’ added the minister.
The names of the students are currently being withheld until the families can be contacted.
A prayer vigil which will be held at NMU’s South Campus Kraal. Transport will be provided for students wanting to attend.
