Education Advocacy group Equal Education (EE) have revealed that learners from Engabezweni Secondary School have reached out in concern as they need to cross a river in the morning to attend school. This as there is a lack of road infrastructure around the school.
The province of KZN suffered devastating floods in April 2022 which left more than 500 schools badly affected. At the time, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education said that ensuring learners can go back to school was not only a moral imperative, but also crucial for their safety, well-being, and humanitarian relief.
Equal Education are calling on the Department of Transport in KZN to deliver road infrastructure because the current lack thereof is impacting the ability of learners to attend school.
The group explained that learners cannot go to school when it rains and the river rises. There is also no safe road that the school bus can use to take them straight to school.
They said, “We are calling on the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport to urgently build a bridge across the river nearby Esikhumbuzweni Secondary, so that the buses provided by the KZN Department of Education can safely transport learners to school.”
Equal Education is also calling on the province's education department to repair the classrooms at the school. This as rain often leaks into the classrooms and broken windows make the classrooms extremely cold when there's no sunshine. This also impacts learning at the school.
