The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has confirmed that a fire broke out at the Drommedaris Primary School in Reiger Park, Boksburg. It has been reported that eight classrooms have been damaged in the blaze along with the school's storeroom.

Drommedaris Primary School governing body was first alerted to the fire at approximately 13:00 on Sunday 5 June 2022. One of the school's general assistants reported the incident and the local fire brigade managed to douse the fire.

“Unfortunately, eight Foundation Phase (Grade R – 3) classrooms and the school’s storeroom were damaged as a result of the fire. Police are currently investigating the circumstances that caused the fire”, explained the GDE.

The department said they are working tirelessly to ensure that learning takes place at the school in the coming days and that the health and safety of the children who attend the school is not compromised.

In a separate incident, terrified learners lost their belongings when flames engulfed the girl's hostel at Dr Block Secondary School in the Free State.

The Free State Education Department expressed relief as no learners were harmed in the blaze.

Education MEC Tate Makgoe revealed that a new facility which was already being built, should be ready to house learners in four-to-six weeks.

“It won't be so much of an interruption but in the interim, there will be accommodation somewhere and then we will be able to arrange transport, such that they should be able to come to school” concluded Makgoe.
