Despite various amendments made to South Africa's lockdown regulations, the decision made regarding licence renewals during the lockdown remains the same.
To prevent further anxiety among South Africans during the lockdown period, transport minister Fikile Mbalula has announced that the validity of a driver’s licence, learner’s licence, motor vehicle licence disc, temporary permit, professional driving permit and roadworthy certificate will extend 30 days after the end of the lockdown.
However, if your licence expired before the lockdown was implemented, you are liable to receive a fine.
Additionally, the Minister has declared and included the following services onto an existing list of essential services:
- Tollgate operators;
- Road emergency operators;
- Employees responsible for the safe operation of the roads; and
- Rail logistic operators
Note that all driving licence testing centres and vehicle testing stations will remain closed during the lockdown period.
